About Christina M Bowen, MD
Christina Bowen, MD, moved to The Outer Banks in 2009. Dr. Bowen and her husband completed residency in Charlotte, NC and decided to raise their family in Eastern North Carolina. They both loved the Outer Banks and all of the wonderful outdoor activities they could enjoy with their children.
In 2003, Bowen earned her medical degree from East Carolina University. She completed her intern year at Duke University and residency at the Carolinas Medical Center in 2008. In 2016, Bowen completed an Integrative Medicine Fellowship at The University of Arizona. She is currently board certified in Family Medicine, Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Lifestyle Medicine and Integrative Medicine.
Bowen works alongside area physicians using integrative and lifestyle medicine to assist patients with general wellness as well as the management of specific health challenges. Her practice is located in The Center for Healthy Living at the Outer Banks Hospital.
Integrative medicine puts the patient at the center and addresses the physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual and environmental influences that affect health and well-being. Utilizing evidence based therapies, Dr. Bowen makes use of appropriate therapeutic approaches to facilitate healing and help people regain and maintain optimum health.
Using this, Bowen works closely with the Outer Banks Hospital Cancer Services to help patients make lifestyle changes for those risk factors for developing and/or relapsing with cancer. “The lifestyle choices we make can influence whether or not we get cancer, just as much or more than any other factors. The good news is that each of us has power over cancer. It is deciding to use that power to make a positive difference that matters. Not smoking, limiting alcohol, exercising, eating a plant centered diet, managing weight and stress — these are the key elements of having power over cancer,” shared Bowen.
Bowen is currently the Medical Director for the Vidant Health Office of Experience, The Center for Healthy Living and The Dare County Health Department.
Married to an Orthopedic Surgeon, Bowen has three children and 2 dogs, Idaho and Quinoa. Dr. Bowen enjoys strength training, running, prayer/meditation, water-skiing, snow-skiing, reading and spending time with her friends. In addition, she loves traveling with her family.
